A twin-engine Beechcraft BE58 aircraft crashed as it was headed to the Kerrville Municipal Airport on April 22, 2019. Witnesses described the plane as being tilted in the air, flying low above the trees, with the engines whining just before the crash.
The aircraft did not make it to the airport but instead crashed on a private ranch property six miles from the airport.
The pilot and five passengers onboard the aircraft have been pronounced dead. Passengers on the plane included the varsity girl’s lacrosse coach at St. John’s School in Houston, her husband, and the owner and employees of a local Houston landscape architecture firm in Houston. The aircraft had been chartered for the purpose of surveying some property in the area.
The pilot and co-owner of the plane worked as the senior vice president of investments at Raymond James & Associates. It is reported that he had more than forty years of experience, and frequently donated his time to non-profit organizations like Angel Flights.
The FAA aircraft registry shows that the plane and its engine were manufactured in 1999. As such, the statute of repose established by the General Aviation Revitalization Act of 1994 may protect and bar claims against the manufacturers of the aircraft, its engine, and any component parts added more than eighteen years ago.
The FAA and NTSB have initiated investigations. Due to the statute of repose created by GARA, the piloting and maintenance of the aircraft will be the central focus of any subsequent civil inquiries or claims.
